A Tour Guide to the Medicinal Plant Garden: Visiting Indiana Medical History Museum

The Indiana Medical History Museum is an historical monument constructed in 1895 and is recorded in National Register of Historic Places as the Oldest surviving Pathology Building. It is a not-for-profit institution which deals with psychiatric medical research and collects the various relics related to medical history.

The Indianapolis museum links the ancient scientific psychiatry and modern medicine. It has three clinical labs, a photography lab, a teaching amphitheater, a library and an autopsy room. This place mirrors the medical heritage and science education.

The Medicinal Plant Garden of this museum is a distinct creation by Purdue University Master Gardeners and contains nearly 100 species of herbs, shrubs and trees belonging to different parts of the world that are famous for medicinal values.

The Plant Garden is trying to increase the awareness of the role played by plant as medicine in ancient civilization. Its main aim is to convey that modern day medicine i.e. manufactured in industries can be originally obtained from nature.

Guiding tours of Plant Garden starts from June till September where the visitors are guided by Master Gardeners of the Museum. The visitors are told about each and every plant, its medicinal use and how it can be used as home remedy.

This garden is well-researched and it is both beautiful and educational and one can get a guidebook with all information and complete illustrations about each plant. Thus, visitors leave the garden with appreciation and a large amount of knowledge about how a plant plays miraculous role in curing various diseases.
