This historic building is located in the Canal and White River State Park Cultural District on 450 West Ohio Street. It is one of United States biggest and oldest historical societies and is well-known as the "story-teller" for the state of Indiana.

The building also has William Henry Smith Memorial library which holds the largest number of archived files, documents and books on the history of the entire Old Northwest including Indiana. The library has preserved and made 14,000 pieces of music sheets, 5,000 manuscripts and numerous other maps, photographs, paintings and broadsides accessible to the public. However, the most noteworthy item in this collection is the original glass plate photograph negative of Abraham Lincoln taken just a little while before the Gettysburg Address. The library operates from 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
