In the year 1820, Indianapolis got selected to be the new capital of the state. While most of the state capitals of America are located in central part of its state, Indianapolis is the capital which is situated exactly at the center of Indiana. The name 'Indianapolis' is made by joining Indiana and polis, a Greek word which means city.
When the city was founded on White River, there was the Governor's Circle at the city's center. This was demolished in the year 1857 and at that place, a 87 meters tall Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands which is made up of neoclassical bronze and limestone. Now, the surrounding street is known as Monument Circle.
The Madison and Indianapolis, the first rail road to serve Indianapolis, became operated in 1847 and since then, several subsequent rail road connections have been made. By the beginning of the 20th century, Indianapolis had become a major regional transportation hub connecting to Louisville, Chicago, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, St. Louis and Detroit.
In the first half of the 20th century, the population of the city grew rapidly. With rapid sub-urbanization, race relations also deteriorated and when Martin Luther King Junior was assassinated, this was the only city where riots did not take place.
