The headquarters of the major governing body of US collegiate sports, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and National Federation of State High School Associations are also located here only. National offices for USA Gymnastics, Synchronized Swimming, Diving and Track & Field are also in Indianapolis. The suburban part of Indianapolis is also the host of the headquarters of Horizon League, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Two major races are hosted by Indianapolis every year: Indianapolis 500 and Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Beginning from the year 2008, MotoGP Motorcycle series also hosts a weekend at speedway for Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. On 20th May 2008, Indianapolis was awarded the right to host the Super Bowl XLVI. Pan American Games were hosted in the city in 1987 and it has also been host to 2002 World Basketball championships. Indianapolis also hosts Indianapolis Tennis Championships which is one of the many tournaments that are part of US open series.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in the Speedway, Indiana, is the site where Indianapolis 500 race takes place. The O'Reilly Raceway Park is the place where the biggest, richest, most prestigious and oldest drag race of the nation takes place on the weekend of every Labor Day.
